William Inge Festival and Collection William Inge, Pulitzer prize-winning playwright, was born and raised in Independence. Each year Independence Community College hosts a three-day festival to honor him, as well as other nationally known playwrights. Past honorees include, Arthur Miller, Neil Simon and Stephen Sondheim. Inge's works include the plays "Picnic" and "Bus Stop", and the Academy Award-winning movie, "Splendor in the Grass." Independence Museum Independence Museum, owned and operated by the Ladies Library and Art
Association, stands as one of the city's prime cultural attractions.
Housed in the former city post office building, it has over 20 rooms
containing valuable antiques and unique artwork, with each room focusing
on a particular theme or culture. |

Elk City Reservoir The reservoir, located five miles northwest of Independence, offers a wide variety of outdoor recreation and forms a lake featuring a shoreline nearly 50 miles long. It offers excellent opportunities for hunting, fishing, camping, boating, swimming, bird watching, hiking and picnicking. For more information:
